On the Shortness of Sleep: Yes Seneca, I’m talking to you

“It is not that we have so little time but that we lose so much. … The life we receive is not short but we make it so; we are not ill provided but use what we have wastefully.”  ― Seneca, On the Shortness of Life

I‘m writing this after waking up this morning at 2.30am. I wasn’t tired at all. My mind was racing. I wanted to go and make coffee. I wanted to do stuff. I wanted to change the world. So I made coffee, checked some emails and worked on my blog for a bit. Now it’s 9.11 am and I’m ready to crash. I can’t see myself making it to noon. Shit.

Well the good intention was there. And still is. I still want to change the world. But I may need a nap first.

How’s your 2.30 am going? Or is it 3, or 4? I watched a TED Talk recently called ‘The 4 am Mystery‘. The speaker entertainingly presents his findings on why 4 am has achieved cult status in popular culture as that most god awful and surreal hour.  For me, 4 am, and often 2.30, is Seneca standing by my bed in a chalky toga, slapping me in the face and pouring cold shivers down my spine.

“Get up you lazy son of a bitch! You’ve got stuff to do, plans to make, things to create!”

Well Seneca, thank you, I’m up. I hope you’re happy. I just wish I didn’t feel like I’ve been punched in the face by a lunatic panda. Right, now who’s with me for saving the world?

  1. WOW! I love that You got up and were productive!!! I say You rock!!! My poor man wakes up often and just lays there. For hours. I call him the Buddha. God! When I wake, I don’t do what either of You do. I get up and put a documentary or quiet show that I like on and try to follow it. The second I try to use my brain I crash back out. Thank God!!!! I would go crazy doing what Bill does and if I followed suit with You I would FOR SURE take a long nap. I’d just do a face plant at some point! Intentionally or not!!! Your blog was cool….and with butterfly effect and all You DID change the world! HA! You made this little corner of the peanut gallery smile. CHEERS!!! Rock on and go take a nap!!! 🙂

    1. Thanks so much Katy!!! Haha yeah I just woke up from a little siesta! Feeling somewhat revived 🙂 I hope you take the opportunity to ask your Buddha some deep and meaningful questions! And that’s a great tip about watching a documentary, I’m going to try that – got any to recommend? Thanks for the wonderful comments, I’m really happy I sent some goodness your way. Just don’t expect it every 2.30 am haha! 😀
